Whalefall Review

How much pressure can you take?

Story
A young diver gets trapped inside a sperm whale while trying to survive against all odds. With his oxygen running low and time slipping away, he must find a way out before it’s too late. Flashbacks to his troubled relationship with his father reveal painful memories and lessons that might ultimately be the key to his survival.

Acting
Great performances by Austin Abrams, who, instead of running for his life as in Resident Evil, finds himself fighting for survival inside a sperm whale, and Josh Brolin as his tough, demanding father, who tries to teach his son about life the hard way.
Their complicated relationship adds an emotional layer to the otherwise outrageous survival story.

Effects
Impressive visual effects bring the enormous sperm whale and the deep-sea environment to life. The giant squid adds another layer of creature-feature madness, while the practical effects inside the whale make the whole experience feel disturbingly realistic, slimy, and claustrophobic. The result is a grotesque visual spectacle that will make you think twice before going for your next dive.

Conclusion
I have to admit, I really wanted to read the book before watching the movie, but didn’t want to spoil the ending for myself. And I wasn’t disappointed! Indeed, a crazy and utterly unrealistic premise about being trapped inside an ocean creature, packed with twists, tension, and plenty of action. A bit too much drama towards the end for my taste — a shorter finale would have worked better. Still, a wild, entertaining ride and a definite must-watch for fans of the survival genre!
